In any system of Medicine the goal of treatment is to maintain the sugar level in the blood in normal limit. This can be achieved by stimulation of healthy beta cells, reducing hepatic secretion of glucose and reduce insulin resistance. Some medicines impair glucose absorption from diet. |

In Ayurveda the treatment for diabetes is ‘systematic’ rather than symptomatic. Dosha sodhanam, Samanaushadham and Rasayanam is recommended. Diet, regime restrictions and exersise preferably yoga is as important as medicines. Diabetes Mellitus
| |
Diabetes is a clinical syndrome characterized by increase in Blood glucose level (hyperglycemia) due to absolute or relative deficiency of insulin. In Ayurveda, the presence of glucose in urine and blood is referred to as “Madhumeham” (there are 20 types of meha diseases). |
Diabetes is classified as: |
A) Primary : |
B) Secondary : |
Madhumeham is caused by a) Dhathukshayam (degeneration of Dhathu) and b) Avaranam (engulfment over Doshas). In Insulin dependant diabetes the causative factors identified are genetic factors, virus, diet , immunological factors and pancreatic diseases. In type 2, insulin resistance, life style, obesity, hereditary aspects, pregnancy etc are decisive. In studies it is now known that the increase in the incidence of this disease is directly proportional to modern urban life style, fast food, lack of exercise free regime, mental tension and preservatives, sweeteners, food additive chemicals etc. That is why diabetes is identified as the king of “life style diseases”. Ayurveda clearly defines how defective life style can precipitate diabetes mellitus. |
